Championing Service

This is my homage to those who volunteer, serving in all capacities. The
giving of themselves and sharing their skills, talents, gifts and experiences.
Those who serve with open hearts. Those who are taken for granted and are overlooked.

I’ve been the recipient of communications from people interested in volunteering for projects. People of good will. There’re questions I ask, after first thanking them for their interest. Which area(s) are you interested in and your areas of expertise? Do you have experience and skillsets in this area? What is your time availability? Why this project? What are your personal interest other than this project? Asking questions are important and can bring into focus new avenues of interest for exploration. A major rule is to offer encouragement and support. Make certain to never silence a person’s enthusiasm and willingness to serve.

One of the greatest truths I’ve learned over the years is to meet people where they are. Appreciate what they are able to bring to the table. Everyone cannot participate in all tasks nor the same tasks. This does not make their commitment nor willingness to serve less important or valued.
There are many considerations to factor in. Take into consideration time, family as well as business commitments and responsibilities. Provide space and opportunities for people to contribute skillsets, the skillsets they are equipped for. People know where they can best serve. Ask them if not knowing. One shoe and style does not fit nor suit all.

Never count people out because they do not fit a specific mold! There is work to be done and everyone is equipped to achieve the village’s collective goals. People are far more gifted and talented than they’re thought to be.
People are holding down jobs, administrators of organizations and businesses. They’re administrators of their households, accountants of households, mediators-resolving conflicts. Some are technology savvy, artists, writers, and organizers. I’ve found creating a list of names with their available skillsets and times can be very valuable.

A happy village, is a productive village.
